Pit-and-fissure Sealants are safe and painless way of protecting your teeth from tooth decay. It is a thin coating that is painted into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of teeth. In this way, a protective layer is formed which prevents food and bacteria entering into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.
Why Pit and Fissure Sealants are important?
The posterior teeth have many grooves (fissures) and pits on its chewing (occlusal) surface. The bristles of the toothbrush often can’t reach these areas thus makes it very difficult to clean which results in developing decay/cavity. The sealants fill these pits and fissures and forms a hard protective barrier against bacteria. Even early cavity appears to stop when covered with a sealant, because decay-causing bacteria are unable to survive when cut off from their food supply.
How sealants are applied on teeth?
The dentist first cleans the teeth , treat it with a solution ,dry it and then finally paints the sealants into the grooves. The sealant is then hardened with a curing light to form a protective coating.
Is the procedure painful?
No, it is completely painless .The procedure is quick and generally takes few minutes per tooth
How long Dental Sealants last?
A properly placed sealant will generally last for several years, after which a reapplication might be required to be sure that no decay can start underneath it.. They are the best protection against tooth cavity. We will check the condition of the sealants when you come in for your regular dental check-ups and if necessary, a reapplication will be carried out.
